I remember seeing this film, in the Virginia Colony Theater in Portsmouth, where he was released. Since then, I have seen at least 30 times, most recently last night. In my humble opinion, Paul Newman and Robert Redford made a movie excellent partner for 30 years [and expanded in a couple of years later, in The Sting]. In reading the assessment presented in this film that makes me happy to see that most people agree with my opinion. How can you not like these characters, along with Etta, "the boys" after them and, finally, Strother [that will always be remembered for his "what we have here is a lack of communication" in a cool Hand Luke] Martin? Not to mention the scenes that Etta enters the picture when Butch is that combating Logan, where they have to jump into the water and, of course, put an end to the sequence of events. I will not say "they do not like they used to," but this is a keeper. And if you agree with my assessment, and have a DVD player, watch the DVD that has interviews, etc., to give a better picture of this excellent film.
A true revisionist Western in the best sense of the term, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was one of the quintessential American films of the sixties, a huge commercial success and showering with Oscar. Over the past years has something fashionable but remains a classic pioneer does not matter how you look. It moves smoothly between the gravity and a beautifully honed comic sensibility continually driven by one of the greatest of all scripts from William Goldman, Jokey too much for some, perhaps, but smart, myth-making and intelligent and at the same time many films that seemed so much of their time or who wore their influences a little too obviously (in this case, the French New Wave), "Butch and Sundance ... ..." certainly is not one of them. It is true that Newman and Redford coast his way through the film, it seems they're having too much fun. This is laconic acting in his most laconic, but of photography Conrad Hall is still stunned by what the movie is as good as it sounds. I have no doubt that George Roy Hill back of the Newman / Redford pairing "The Sting" 's best picture Oscar was given to compensate for "Butch's" failure to take home the grand prize.
I may be young, but this is one of my favorite movies (including Paul Newmans, no surprise). Which movie! It's funny, friendly and understandable, which is more than I can say so many Westerns. I do not usually enjoy them, but Newman and Redford are great actors working together brilliantly, producing a film that deserves more recognition these days.
OK, for those of you who are not sure whether "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid" is a good, or even a great movie, do the following: Scroll down to "memorable quotes." Come on, do it and then read what follows. I will be here when I get back. Finished? Have you read these lines? That, my friends, and that the fact that they are spoken by a few large players is what makes this movie so wonderful. They are perfectly balanced between being funny, endearing and also revealing about the characters. There is a genuine warmth and emotion in a lot of that. Conrad Hall, George Roy Hill, Burt Bacharach et al contributed wonderfully, but I love the cast, and that capacity for some of them in small but memorable role: George Furth, Ted Cassidy, Kenneth Mars, Strother Martin, Katherine Ross and the stars at the top, Newman and Redford did perfect justice to the script Goldman.
"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is rightly hailed as one of the greatest westerns ever made, although much of the film takes place in South America. It is a great look at the two outlaws nice, full of witty dialogue and exciting action sequences. Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and The Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) are two bank robbers, chased by the law. The plot continues as they travel to Bolivia after a railroad president hires a group to hunt to do. The story is mainly composed of short pieces by saying a little history about them. There really is no connection all the way through, for the most part. The story is not about the plot, however. This is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It's a close look at two offenders, the talented Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which does all the thinking. The charisma and screen presence of two actors and working together is what drives the film. Watching the two interact with an excellent script full of great dialogue, is what makes this movie so exciting. See this movie if you're a fan of westerns, or just a fan of good movies. It's exciting, beautifully made (with a lot of interesting scenes in silence to music and photo montages), but also has a lot of depth. From **** ****
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance son was, by Hollywood-skeptical of me, a reminder of how the cinema can be an art. It is so beautifully prepared! Paul Newman and Robert Redford shine as the title character - I could not take my eyes off them on screen. The cast plays off of them wonderfully, and the screenplay, full of wit and charisma, is the best I've ever seen. There are some wonderful footage of the filming of this movie, innovative used to complement the scenes and the plot. The result is memorable - not only radical soundtrack stuck in the framework of a Western music is really beautiful and creative in itself. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance son is a poignant classic - do not make 'em like this.
